The Death of Websites?

This isn’t link bait or an attempt to create a viral post through controversy, I just really want people to think about the role that websites play in their IM business.  ( I am fully aware of the irony of posting this on my blog! )

All I ask is that you read it with an open mind and let me know what you think.

One of the things that I’ve been thinking about recently is the place that websites play in our businesses.

By website I mean a collection of pages not just a 1 or 2 page site with a sales page or landing page.

It’s good to start the week with something to stimulate the grey matter so lets think about this a bit.

When I started online I spent lots of time building niche websites and trying to get them to rank well on Google.

Back then a number 1, 2 or 3 ranking site stood proudly at the top of the google results and made a lot of money.

Have you had a look at the results pages in google recently?

3 or more ads, Google places, news sites and all other types of distractions. I’ve seen several #1 ranking sites below the fold.

People still try to rank on google … seriously?

An ad may cost you anything from 1c upwards per click(Yes you can still get low cost clicks)

How much does it cost to get a site onto google’s front page using SEO?

It’s probable a lot more as “Free” traffic doesn’t and never has existed.

So back to the question in hand what should you be using websites for?

Forget building niche websites and hoping for AdSense clicks it’s really not a viable model any more.

I used to be able to get 20-25% click through rates, I struggle to get 4% now.

What about list building?

List building is what you should be doing, but here’s a secret you don’t actually need a website for it.

Or if you do have a website you don’t need much content.

Look at the image below 2 lists in the same niche the top is the subscribers over a 7 day period from a $5 a day Facebook campaign the bottom is from a signup form thats been on a blog for about 3 months the blog has  3 or 4 posts a day

I want you to think about this for a minute and remove any ego from the equation.

Why do you have a website?

Whats it’s role In your business?

Can you do achieve that role in a more efficient manner?

Unless you are selling something direct to the public the answer is probably that you can do it much more effectively without a website.

The website is a distraction and a time suck and quite often a barrier between you and your customers.

Be honest with yourself could you generate more leads and sales without a website?

Does it make sense to send a client to a website to read the details of what you are offering when you could use the email they are reading to sell the product or service?

And speaking of that, this is exactly what we’ve done over the weekend with the WTF! launch.

We’ve sold it to our lists via email then sent them to a page with a few details and a buy button.

You may have already seen the process first hand. In which case you’ll agree that the sales page is appalling. (another secret.. it’s converted better than any of our recent sales pages)

On that note there are only a few more days until we shut down what is the best product I’ve ever created.

It’s the exact system that myself and Pete are using to build massive laser targeted lists.

This is the future of marketing.
