Work Smarter Not Harder

By Mark / October 19, 2007

If you still need to hold down a full time job while at the same time trying to build up your online portfolio you should be looking to build income from projects that take little maintainance. It’s all very well for someone to write a book telling you to create a site then submit 5 articles a day for a month (This was really the recommendation in a report I read this week!) but it’s not realistic.  Yes you could outsource the work but you’d soon have spend $750-$1000 before you’d made a cent. This is now money that you have to recuperate before you are in profit.

I’ve seen people just starting out spend $1500 on a site and expect the money to pour in. Time to wake up and smell the coffee, unless you are very very lucky you will need to work on promoting  which takes time. I saw a thread in a forum this week where the guy was just starting out and had a plan to spend this week building 30 sites. I tried to explain to him that he would do much better by building 1 or 2 and concentrating on those but he was adamant that by building 30 he would find a few that would be sucessful. Unless he finds a magic bottle with a genie it’s not going to happen.

You need to look for something thats quick to set up, requires very little maintainance and easy to promote. Once these initial sites are making you money then you can re-invest some of the profit into outsourcing and take on much bigger projects. It’s also preferable to make mistakes on small projects.

When I started out I created a series of AdSense sites, They were quick to build , I added some unique content to them on a semi regular basis and did a small bit of promotion work. This income soon built up until it was at a level where I could afford to undertake bigger projects and know that I would still have an income at the end of the month.

Take advantage of the free resources around you. I combined 2 free resources with 2 monetization methods earlier in the year on a domain that cost me $8.  It takes less than 10 minutes a week to update.  So far it’s earned me in excess of $300. This isn’t a huge amount BUT it’s a regular income and it cost me nothing and it only takes 10 minutes a week.  The 2 free Resources are WordPress and Google Alerts, WordPress provides the platform Google alerts provide me with the  content. The 2 monetization methods are Adsense and a Datafeed from

This is just one very simple method of creating low maintenance income there are many more available to you.
