What Has Eating an Airplane got to Do With IM Success

By Mark / December 27, 2010

In 1978 Michel Lotito started to eat a Cessna 150, by 1980 he’d finished his “meal” and had eaten the complete aircraft. Now what has that got to do with Internet marketing and the ability to make money online, actually quite a lot so stick with this a bit longer and i’ll explain.

But first ask yourself if you wanted to become the president Of the United States what would you need to do? I’ll give you two choices here.

Option 1. Write out a note saying “Be President of The United States” and stick it on your Monitor.

Option 2: Sit down for a few days and create a step by step plan about how to be the President of the United States. Starting off with something small like become member of the Local school Board, then moving on to Local mayor, then a State office , then running for Governor etc…

The thing is at this time of year many people set targets and goals and they usually consist of option 1. They should in fact consist of a detailed step by step plan. There is no point in setting goals if you have no plan about how to achieve it. In the example above by having your first step of joining a school board you have a very achievable target that will then lead you onto other steps in your plan.

You know where to start and what you can do… you can even break it down into smaller steps…

1. Speak to the head of the school board about how I join..

or

1. Speak to other parents about supporting me If I run for the School Board…

Once again these steps can be broken down further..

1. Find the contact details for the head of the school Board.

Or

1. Speak to Johns parents on friday at the football game.

The more you break down your goals into easily achievable steps the more success you will have.

I’ve used the example about being The president but I could just have easily set the main goal as earn $100,000 or Generate $20,000 a month from blogs. It’s then just about breaking the goal down into achievable steps over a given period of time .

This is where we get back to our Airplane devouring friend, if he had decided to eat an airplane without planning how to do it he would never have got past the first few days. Instead he sat down and worked out that if he ate 1 or 2 pounds of metal every day he could finish the job in 2 years. You see with a simple step by step plan anything is achievable. Where most people fail is the planning stage.

Now is a great time to plan and set goals you should know by now what it takes to make money online, if not read back through some of my posts or pay a visit to WordPress Goldmine there you’ll find lots of people earning money by doing the simple things.

This made me laugh as I had thought to myself this morning “how many emails about goals will i get this week”.

I wont even be doing any planning until I have collected a list of my assets and expenses.
I will be making a full list of all my sites and products and working out which hasn’t earned what it should and then I will make a plan to maximize the income from each of them in 2011.

Much easier to increase your income from sites you already have than to try and find the next golden niche.

Great Post Mark.

Brian Tracy’s book “Maximum Achievement” talks about your point great detail.

Funny this. I’ve been studying up on this area and am right now running off an exact plan to execute a gaol most germane to Beyond Commission. See, I’d been beating my brains wondering what was wrong with my goal-setting and visualizing. The art of it is in the laying out of structured plans and keeping to them. An encouraging coincidence that Mark’s post should reinforce that same precise point.

The day after Christmas I sat down with a notebook and pen and began planning what I wanted to accomplish in 2011 starting with stream-of-consciousness writing. Then I started my lists, narrowed the focus for each main area, covered what I needed to do to get where I wanted to be by December 2011. By the time I got done, I was so excited about this next year.

The main point at the end of the exercise that took a couple of hours and a lot of brainstorming was that I needed to focus and I needed to finish or let go of all the courses and so-called gurus that I have been following. I’ve been trying to eat more than one airplane at a time – no wonder I am not getting where I want to be.

This post is a great reminder as far as focus and discipline – I’m great at planning, but the plan just sits there collecting dust. Now to move on to putting the plan into action on a daily basis.

I just looked at my goals’ list for 2010 and the “3 words” I identified for my mantra – and almost wish it was 1.1.10 again!

I think I will try Mark’s sensible advice this year. Or maybe only pick 2 words…

Hey Mark,

I’m glad I found your blog, and I love the airplane analogy. I think the most difficult part of Internet Marketing isn’t necessarily the action and focus it’s knowing which actions to take in what order. Like me, last year I bought 60 domain names over time in a frenzy of excitement but didn’t really know what the heck to do with them. I lacked discipline for sure, but I also lacked the knowledge of what steps to plan. Time is so valuable and its the difference between spinning your wheels or actually accomplishing things.

Anyway I’m finally finding my way to some genuine people in the IM community so thanks again for putting up quality stuff.

Best,

Seth

Seth,

There are lots of genuine people involved in IM The problem is that we don’t shout as loud as some of the less desirable ones!

Terrific read Mark. You are spot on. Goals need to be written down. My whiteboard dislodged itself from my study wall last year and have I put it back up? You know the answer to that one. It’s stationed behind the door. Goals out of sight, nothing achieved. Thankyou so much for the reminder. I’m off to re-hang my board on which are written – my goals! Clearly they weren’t working, so writing new golas is also on the agenda.
Thankyou Mark. You are such a generous IM friend.

Solid post, Mark.

I often wonder what separates the ‘doers’ from the ‘dreamers’ in anything, whether it be eating and airplane or making money online. And your post does have a lot of it down…

But I would also add one thing, which I think is essential:

Total trust.

Trust in yourself especially, but also trust in what you’re doing is right, and is in alignment with who you are and what life means to you.

I think many people fail not because they fail to plan or aren’t focused or disciplined, but because somewhere along the way they realize that they don’t really want it as bad as they thought.

I’ve noticed that more than anything else, people who are successful really trust and believe in their abilities to achieve the goal.

Hi Mark, Andy here from themastermind group. I completely agree with your post. Things started changing for me when I set out proper plans. I really started to get things done when I began setting out a daily to do list. Small steps and the journey has begun,

Hi Mark!

I just listened to your interview with Lisa and read a few of your blog posts. I found your site because I was impressed with some of your comments on the WF. You seem to have a clear head and reasoned approach to IM and wanted to let you know I appreciate it.

Best of luck to you!
