Facebook Vs Google – Who’s The Daddy?

By Mark / January 25, 2011

I was recently checking some stats and noticed that a lot of traffic that used to come from Google was now coming from Facebook. Over the past year it seems that facebook has gained a lot of momentum and is challenging Google as a prime source of traffic.

If you haven’t started to look at facebook as a means of driving traffic to your site you need to startt o look at that option now.
I’ve recorded a short video to demonstrate exactly what I mean.

I’d love your thoughts on the whole Google vs Facebook battle and what you think will happen in the future

Hi Mark

I have been using facebook and have created a fanpage on a special diet and I send them information in PDF files . What I like about this is the people are very responsive and are on your page because they are interested in the subject. and has a viral effect as I have had members of the same family follow… and they come to me instead of me chasing them .

Hi Mark

Thanks for your thoughts on the subject of using facebook to drive traffic to one’s websites.

Bringing out another video showing the integration of Facebook into a website would be very beneficial. I find it a bit of a confusing topic at the moment and would really like to learn more on it.

Thanks

Mark,

This is actually really important and I think something that a lot of people aren’t on top of. Facebook is definitely becoming a major player, although I suspect it tends to be for socially viral kind of search, rather than hard core business.

Its fabulous because it ties in to our inner nosiness, so if we see that a friend likes something we will probably check it out and possibly like it too!

It is also worth noting that as Bing is the Search Engine of Choice for Facebook that optimisation for Bing is going to become more important.

I have periodically used Facebook for search rather than Google and the Bing results tend to be pretty accurate.

Hi Mark,
Good info, what I found is that the facebook traffic tends to be tire kickers, same with twitter, I suppose the truth will be when those coming from facebook actually convert into buyers.

One of the best converting taht I have is in a highly targeted niche – the site is on page 1 of all the SEO’s and is a basic html site built with dreamweaver, it toook around 9 months to get there – there are no articles or PR’s done just highly targeted keywords. The site brings in on average €600 every 4 weeks. The only promotion that has been done is forum posts, that tend to be on forum useing vBulliten platforms.

The site traffic is not huge but the conversion rate is fantastic and I working on more of the same stuff in that niche. I will check out the facebook thing as I have found some scripts that seem to be able to put paypal into the facebook pages and further promote sales etc.

Cheers

Mike

Hi Mark,

I’m 38 and work from home. I don’t know who’s going to win this showdown. What I DO know is that I spend all day on Facebook and Twitter, and I only use Google to check my email and search for stuff.

Now I’m reading the comments here on your post and it looks like people are having amazing success with marketing using Facebook, and more than just their Ads.

Google’s tried a few times to jump on the SM bandwagon but haven’t figured it out quite yet. Facebook, for all their privacy issues and control-freak reputation, just keeps on innovating and making it more THE place to hang out online.

Great post, man.

Hi Mark

Thanks for this valuable information. I am busy at the moment looking into FB, but getting the page up with an opt in form is still in my learning curve 🙂

Can you maybe do some video on how to set up your FB page and give some tips around this subject?

Many thanks
Werna

Mark,

As much as I HATE Facebook I have to agree with you. It is time to take a closer look. You might want to look up Jo Barnes on Facebook and check out her course.

Hey Mark,

Thanks for the video, great stuff. Yes, Facebook have actually overtaken Google when it comes to traffic!

See the latest stats here:
http://www.hitwise.com/us/datacenter/main/dashboard-10133.html

In fact, for the overall stats of 2010 FB top Google. Just be careful when running FB PPC campaigns. You can burn money fast if you don’t have your demographics “spot on”.

Start your campaign very tight with a small budget – then test, test, test!

Take care,
Mark Acutt

Hi Mark,
This is great stuff, I think social media is going to be the wave of the future, from what I’ve been reading social media, rss feed etc. already out ranks google by quit a large margin.I think is getting to big for there britches, I my self am beginning to dislike them, they have a very big aire of arrogance about them almost equal to that of a tyrant.

Perhaps you could be persuaded to write a step by step course on how to set this up on face book ,
that we could purchase and learn from.

Mark you are my favorite guru I really appreciate your products I have all your products WPG..Beyond commission and video mastery.
Thanks for all your honest help

Hi larry… Don’t Call me “Guru” !!

I haven’t got a full grasp of the complexities of facebook yet so a book is a far way off but I am working closely with someone who is doing FB marketing as a job so I might get her to write a blog post about it.
