Are We Wasting Time and Money Building backlinks?

By Mark / August 5, 2011

Are you spending too much time back linking?

(Listen to the interview below …it might just change the way you think about Backlinks)

If you’ve been paying attention you’ll have noticed thatIam running an SEO competition. As a resultIam working hard every day making sureIresearch as much about what is working in sep at the moment and what’s not.

It’s pointless just taking what people say about SEO for granted ,Ilearned a long time ago that the only way to get the truth about whats working is to do it yourself or look at case studies that people have published.

One thing that I’ve long suspected is that back linking is not as effective as it once was, it’s obviously really once everyone starts building massive amounts of back links google are going to penalize them in some way.

A few weeks backIpicked up a report from a guy called Casey Case who got a Keyword to the first page of google in 11 days and number 1 in 39 days. 2 months later he’s still in number 1 spot.

usually in these type of case studies the keyword is one that’s easy to rank for …Not in this case. Casey went up against some big and small companies and got there with just 70 back links . Some of his competitors had thousands of links and sites that were 12 years old.

Casey beat them by focusing on a few key tactics he’s picked up over the past year.  There is one tactic that will change the way your front page looks forever!

I was originally only going to release the interview to the people taking part in the Seo competition butIreally think this should be shared among as many people as possible.

Don’t worry it’s only 15 minutes long and gets straight to the point.

If you like what you heard and would like to read cases report it will cost you less that $10 and might just be the best investment you make this year…especially if you are building thousands of backlinks!  Casey Case SEO DeMystified

Just done the on-page keyword density on my site. I’ve gone from position 14…. to page 6… to page 9…
So am trying to work that one out.

Mark… have you had a lot of links go live recently? signup for a free account at serpiq and analyse your competition and your site there, it will give you some ideas of where to target

Mark – the only thing we’ve done is try to improve the keyword density between 2 -4%. And the site has dropped like a stone. We used Blogger High. Have not done any form of backlinking recently.

Hey Mark,

I’m the founder of serpIQ.com. Thanks for mentioning us in your podcast! I just wanted to confirm that yes, we are planning on launching a lower priced account in the very near feature, as well as a really really cool feature that no one has ever done before that should make figuring out the competition of a keyword even easier.

I’d love to discuss serpIQ further with you, feel free to reach out to me at the email I used for this comment.

Thanks!

Darrin

Hey Mark,

Thanks for the interview. I already have casey’s product and it is a good case study. I also have had a couple of friends come to me about building them a website and another talking about ranking.

I asked them what about the person who built it originally. They said it would be very expensive and difficult to rank on the first page of google. I checked their site out and they have not one single on-page SEO at all and no keywords ranking for that site.

Some plugins I use is SEOPresser for my on page SEO, but there is another newer plugin available over at the WF but can’t remember what it is called. I also use SEO Spyglass to reverse engineer my competition.

This is the first time I have heard of sirpiq.com so will check it out.

Cheers

Craig

Mark or Darrin,

I went to check out the site, but in all honesty I couldn’t understand how it worked. How am I supposed to analyze my site or my compettiion? Does the tool give any info on the on-page SEO that should be done? Is there a guide that explains how the tool works.

Sorry, I’m sure I missed it.

Thanks,
Jo

Jo,

Enter your url and the keyword you are researching, you’ll then find loads of stats, in the area where the top 10 domains are listed plus your domain click on the green plus and it opens up to show on page and off page factors. http://blog.serpiq.com/ there is webinar which shows in in depth on the site http://blog.serpiq.com/

I gladly invite debate on this, but the keyword that Casey built this whole thing around shows zero searches on wordtracker, wordpot and the SEO Book keyword tool whch includes google, yahoo, & bing. He bases the difficulty level on number of results, but this really means nothing, as it doesn’t mean that anyone is actually targeting this exact term. Also his site is not monetized. I would like to see this working on a monetized, medium-traffic keyword before I took it seriously.

Hi Chuck,

I personally look at it differently than you. I feel that the level of competition in a case study like especially post Panda is more important than searches. If the methods work and can rank you in a niche thats as competitive than this then , they’ll work in niches with higher searches that are less competitive. If i had the number one spot in the niche he targets i wouldn’t monetize it either… I’d contact the companies that are on the second page and offer to sell the site to them 🙂

Someone mentioned an alternate SEO Plugin. One that I use is ClickbumpSEO! which has is mentioned in Warrior Forum. Right now I’m just about to get into some heavy serious promotion so SEO Demystifed is most timely and I’ll be incorporating a lot of what’s in here. Many thanks for the heads up.

Hi Mark,

Interesting stuff!!

I abosutely agrre with all said, I have several sites that are number 1 and also on page 1 of the “great” google, for highly targeted niches that generate offline income to the tune of 500 / 600 euro weekly, each. These sites are nothing to do with IM stuff.

The sites are domain name targeted and keyword rich for the niches targeted with very few backlinks, mainly because I find it tiresome doing a pile of links or even outsourcing them.

I think that the “backlink therom” is something perpetuated by paleces like the warrior forum because loadsa people are selling links etc.

Anyway just my 2 cents – back to the beach, surfs up weyhey….

Cheers

Mike
