Well this is what happened to me earlier this week. On over 100 sites Not 1 AdSense ad was appearing.

How did I feel?

Elated! Yes seriously and that feeling shocked me.

I felt elated because the first thing that went through my mind was that I was finally free of having to update my sites, free of having to worry about what google was doing. That feeling shocked me as I had never thought about my beloved AdSense sites like that, I’ve had some of them since the first week I started in IM.

Unfortunately that feeling of joy and release didn’t last…. the ads came back along with an email from AdSense

This morning we had a brief outage for AdSense for Content that affected a small amount of publishers, and we apologize for the inconvenience. Our engineers worked diligently to identify and fix the problem, and all ad serving should now be resumed for your websites. I guess that was a bit of a wake up call to me and showed me my real feelings about one of my businesses. Over the next few months I think I am going to bundle up my AdSense sites and sell them off in groups of 10 or 15.

I say one of my businesses because that is how I treat each aspect on my online endeavors. Before this I had decided to change the way I worked in 2012, I am developing and focusing on 1 new  business for the first 4 months of the year, you’ll no doubt here a lot more about that in the weeks to come because it’s big and something completely different.  I talked about it in the podcast I released yesterday which you can find on the blog or on iTunes if you want to subscribe to it.. just go to podcasts and search for “mjthompson”.  That podcast is another key aspect of my new business model.

For me 2012 is going to be the year of reaching out, I’ve decided that I am going to reach out to subscribers and other internet marketers in a number of ways, the podcast is only the start I’ll be sharing the ups and downs of life as an internet marketer in it. I intend to fully document the new business in a series of monthly reports that will tell you exactly how I got the idea and how I generate the income and even what the income is… total transparency.

I really have had enough of some of the directions that Internet Marketing is going, and if I don’t like something I am going to try to do something about it….. stay tuned it could be a Interesting year.

If you haven’t  then you’ve missed a a big trick, and it’s all to do with the buying dynamic.

Spend a moment to think about what happens in the first 11 months of the year, we generally buy online for ourselves. We know what we want, we are looking for the best deal and we are looking for information about the products and what they will do for us.

Now consider buying for christmas, what are we looking for now?  Ideas for gifts, we don’t really care about what they will do for us and we aren’t all that interested in information we just want something that will be appreciated by the person who receives the gift.

You can make this work in your favor by adding images  and test that say things like  “Perfect Gift for Grandma”  “What every Woman wants This Christmas”

The buyers aren’t telling us what they want to buy they are relying on us as online sellers to tell them. So tell them that head massager that you’ve sold 1 of in the previous 11 months is a great gift and will be treasured, tell them what to buy, give guidance and advice.

Change the wording on your site and target different keywords,  words like Gift,Present and Christmas should be liberally scattered around,  guest posts , press releases and articles should target the christmas period and nothing else. If you have testimonials or reviews , try to find ones that mention how the gift was received and mentions the christmas keywords.

Also allay fears, what does everyone fear about online buying at christmas?

Non delivery before christmas, so tell them it’s guaranteed delivery in 48 hours or 72 hours.  Tell them they can order up to December 20th to guarantee delivery or what ever day is the deadline.  If it’s a downloadable product tell them they can even buy it on Christmas day if the need to.

Don’t forget to include items like gift vouchers, whats the perfect last minute gift for someone you forgot to buy for?  I don’t know  but  tell the shopper it’s a Digital gift voucher!

I had several positive comments about the theme of providing more and consuming less, so I thought it would be good to expand it some more here.

First off the email will be at the bottom of the post, it was the 2nd of a 2 part email.  It did go on a bit too long and I had to cut it so i’ll flesh it out a little here.

Firstly what do I mean by Provide More Consume Less, If you’ve been in Internet marketing for more than a few months you probably know most of what you need to know. There really is very little new that you need to know. Granted things do change , For example what worked in SEO 3 years ago doesn’t work now and Facebook Marketing wasn’t a blip on the horizon 3 years ago.

However the basics are just the same.  You need to know 3 things

Whether it is an Adsense site, an Amazon site or a product on Guinea Pig Racing the principles are the same.

If you become a provider you are creating the sites, you are selling things or facilitating the sale to the consumers.  Recently I sold 5  Clickbank products about creating a specific type of business that earned me $90 each in commission.  That is  $450 was simply on the back of me spending time  and creating the environment where people would buy the products.

They are the Consumers – You are the Provider. At least thats how it should be.

To start to make more money today is simple

1. Provide more ,

Give consumers more opportunities to pay you money.  Add more sites, Add more products, Add more free reports.  If you create products they don’t have to be award winning huge products. In the past year I’ve made much more by simplifying things.  Got sites that make you $100 a month?  Tell people how you do it. If their sites make $75 a month they’ll be interested.  Look at what Bethany did in the email below, 2 months to make enough money to be a full time Intent Marketer, just chasing the stuff others assume isn’t profitable

I was chatting with a group of about 20 people today who had a challenge to make $50,000 in 3 months  One smashed that figure into oblivion, one doubled it and several broke it or are close to breaking it… Nothing they created or sold was for more than about $17.  The ones that are succeeding just got their heads down and did it. They aren’t superhuman, they are no different to anyone of us.

You can do it as well….

2. Consume Less

Just buy what you need, even if it’s just something that will refresh what you already know it will be of far more value than if it’s a shiny hyped magic button that will just sit on your hard drive. Focus on what will make your sites/projects make more money.    (Maybe that should have been buy more wisely)

Thats it,  2 steps only and it will work. I guarantee it.

Internet marketing is no different from the marketing thats

been done for centuries.

 

There are 2 classes of people providers and consumers

your target should be to become a provider not a consumer.

 

If you create a website with information and someone buys

from you you are a provider. If you create a product and

people buy it, once again you are a provider.

 

Now this is where things get sticky!

 

When you start out in IM you are a consumer, you buy products

that teach you how to become a provider. When you are a

provider you buy products that help you become a better provider

 

Believe it or not people who we look up to as guru’s

(is that an Oxymoron? ) even at times buy products from those

higher up the marketing food chain.

 

The Secret  = Consume Less Provide More

 

So what should you be doing to make money today?

 

There are 2 things that you can start to do today that will have

an instant impact.

 

 

Provide More

 

Look at your business and work out where you can

provide more.

 

If you have a site that getting 1000 visitors a month.

Build a list around it.  Create products a round it.

 

If you are selling a clickbank product, commission your own

 

20 sales a month of a $7 report might not seems much

but when you have 20 sites running on autopilot doing

similar sales..it soon mounts up

 

In yesterdays blog post (mjthompson.net) I talked about

people making $30,000 a month as affiliates from low cost

products.

 

Thats something to aspire to!

 

 

Target the Easy Money.

 

How many here would not bother with a keyword that

has 500 searches per month?  Probably most yet you’ll

rank easily for it, and 2 or 3  pages of easy ranking 500 search

keywords, sure beats struggling to rank a term that lots

of people are targeting

 

In fact the report I read yesterday is about just that.

(yes i did buy it!)  went from a J.O.B to Full time IM in just 2

months , by just targeting easy to rank keywords.

One thing I got wrong in that was that I said affiliates probably wouldn’t want to promote a product that was selling at $8 – $12  I was wrong , some affiliates have woken up to the fact that low cost products can provide good value to their subscribers while at the same time earning them a living.

After all we are Internet marketers and Internet marketing is how we put food on the table.

I was doing some research the other day and discovered that there are several marketers making over $30,000 a month just selling low cost wso’s  These marketers are being very selective in what they promote.

The criteria is generally,

Quality:  Demonstrated by purchasing the product or asking for a review copy and feedback by genuine buyers

Value: generally selling below $17

Conversion Rate:  They look for good converting products 10% is probably the absolute minimum.

Earnings:  They look at $1 + per visitor (many good wso’s are over $1.70 per visitor)

Low Refund Rate:  It goes without saying avoid products with high refund rates.

For me apart from Quality (which goes without saying as we are building  a long term business) the important figure is the Conversion rate , this tells you lots about the product,  a high conversion rate tells you the sales page is good, the offer is attractive and above all buyers are attracted to it.

In practical terms this means that if a marketer sends 1000 people to product converting at 15%  150 will buy,  if the earning per visitor is $1.50  the income will be $1500

Which is the same as:

If the average price is $10 the 150 sales will earn $1500

Now consider sending the same 1000 people to a clickbank page that converts at a rate of 2% (which is good)  you’d need to earn $75 commission to equal the wso offer.

Another major point is that many customers will appreciate that you are finding them low cost quality products instead of promoting the usual rubbish that everyone else is promoting at inflated prices.

Another reason why so many marketers are looking at wso’s for their income is that there is a lot less competition. If there is a major launch you’ll find lots of people emailing you trying to get you to buy via their link. With many WSO’s  you will probably find that you are possibly the only one emailing out especially if you pick up an older WSO that wasn’t well promoted.

Believe me there are some superb products being sold as WSO’s the reputation for all wso’s being rubbish is no longer deserved and more and more big name marketers are testing the waters there and providing incredible value.

So how does this relate to you?  Simple, you can earn a very good income by following a few very simple steps. put this in place today and I guarantee that you’ll be earning money by the end of November, done right you really don’t need a big list.

Find a topic in IM that interests you, SEO, Adsense, offline marketing, etc

1. Get an aweber account

2. Start to build a list around that niche, continue building.

3. Write Interesting emails and schedule them to go out regularly twice a week maybe monday  & wednesday or wednesday and friday  etc. Remember as a friend of mine Mark Pocock said today when talking about emails …stories sell.

4. Find a good Quality WSO every week and promote it in the 2nd email.  The first email should give good info and be entertaining…leave them waiting for and wanting your next email.

Thats it, do it right and the world is your oyster… seriously you could soon be one of the marketers earning $30,000 a month. Even if it’s “only” $3000 a month isn’t that better than a poke in the eye with a pointy stick?

One final tip… too many people get on lists then leave because they are being marketed to… be professional, those emails are your classroom. Learn from them, if it takes and hour to read them all every day do it… learn from it, take what you like and use it, what you don’t like  avoid . Build a swipe file of the best bits and the best headlines.

Google seems determined to make us all jump through hoops to get ranked and when we do finally start to rank they change the rules again and then we have to start over again. Google seems to hate people who use the internet to make money… well everyone who isn’t them or one of their partners.  They provide great tools and ways of making money then if you use them they penalize you.

Every month I get an email from google telling me to add more ads to my site as I am missing out on revenue. Wake up guys I am trying to provide information the Income comes as a result of that! First and formost we are information providers who then choose to monetize our sites not the other way around, when was the last time anyone added an income stream before the content?

I think one of the big problems with google is the human element, the manual reviewers.

I recently managed to get a site reincluded in the index. This site was de-indexed about 2 years ago and finally after the 5th reinclusion request it was re-indexed. What was the difference this time? I didn’t care whether it got reincluded or not so I told them exactly what I thought.

Yep I had a good old fashioned rant and told them they had their priorities wrong and they could stick their search engine where the sun doesn’t shine. You see I finally figured out why my site had been deindexed…duplicate content. The problem was my site was the original site and because it was featured in a few places it was copied by several people.

Then as my site was ranking #1 it was manually reviewed and de-indexed because it was the same as other sites.  A google manual reviewer assumed that I must have been doing something wrong and hit me with the ban hammer. As I said it’s take 5 requests to get that mistake overturned.

One thing that became clear to me recently is that the google index is not a level playing field. If you put up a site thats thin on content and is primarily aimed at making sales you’ll get penalized. If on the other hand you are a well known e-commerce store then you’ll rank well with the same content.

I did a search for “Laser Range Finder Review”  what was sat in the top 3 with lots of images?(try doing that with adsense!)  Googles product search,  which leads you to an page listing prices from lots of stores.  Lets make it plain here, Google has manipulated the search results to place these at the top of the page. How long before they start charging for the listings to appear or take commission from any resulting sales.

It feels good to get that lot off my chest!

I am sure most of you know i’ve spent the last 2 months along with other members of WordPress Goldmine trying to work out just what it takes to rank well in google.  The result was 3 sites in the top 10 after 2 months. Even if I say so myself that is an impressive result, but whats more impressive was last week google tweaked the algorithm again and one of the sites actually went up one place and the highest ranked kept it’s position.

Everyone who took part learned a hell of a lot and produced some really good data, list of fiver gigs and SEO Diaries that we included in the product along with over 2 hours of video and case studies we created SEO Debunked. Finally I was sent a really cool plugin a few weeks back, I’ve been meaning to write about it since then but life got in the way. It allows you to display ads just like adsense but focused on Warrior Special offers (WSO’s)  You’ll see that I added an ad to the top of the sidebar for Listbuilding debunked sidebar  but you can add as many as you like and also add them to the area above the blog title.

So now that i’ve made that clear it’s good to see that California looks set to repeal the “Amazon Tax Law” that was recently passed and resulted in Amazon dropping all is californian affiliates , believed to be over 10,000 people. Amazon have stated that they will re-instate their affiliates.

I first came across this trend for US states to punish their residents when Colorado instigated their law.  It looked like a stupid law to me then as it does now.   I like to think i am quite logical and have a bit of commonsense anyone with an inkling of either must have seen the utter stupidity of these laws unless they had an ulterior motive.

Here’s my View.

Imagine I live in Denver in Colorado and have a few sites selling Amazon products.  Every month I get a nice payment into my bank of $1000.  I then spend that money in state. Lets assume that the sales tax figure is 10%   thats $100 that goes to the state in sales tax from that $1000. Great.. everyone is happy.

The State then says … Amazon Sales Tax   Amazon kick me out of the affiliate program so I don’t get my $1000 and the state don’t get their $100… everyone loses.

What Am I going to do the next time I get a chance to Vote in an Election?

This is a stupid situation made worse by the federal system which means that states have widely varying rates of sales tax.

A Free Alternative To Outsourcing

Running an IM related forum means that I spend lots of time testing tools and products many of them aren’t worth recommending so after a month or two I stop using them or cancel my subscription.  There are usually several reasons I don’t stick with them.

1. They just don’t work

2. They are too complicated and take too much work (Synnd)

3. They aren’t really worth the money. (senuke/senukeX)

4. They just miss the point….  (no one needs 100,000 auto generated low quality back links!)

However having said that there are a number of tools i’ve been using for 4 years or more and several I’ve been using over a year.

Both Socialadr and Ezarticlelink are products that I am still using on an almost daily basis while tools like linxboss and serpassist were great for 6 months or so then seemed to lose their power.

As I am in the middle of an SEO competition at the moment (3 weeks in and it seems no one has been sandboxed yet and several of us are on the first few pages of google already..!) I’ve had to dig around and make sure i have the best tools for the job.

It really does seem that for the type of link building that seems works at the moment you don’t need very many fancy expensive tools.  Apart from Socialadr (social media links) Ezarticlelink  (article and blog back links) and the new tool I’ve started to use Build My Rank you really don’t need much more (Fiverr is proving valuable at the moment but more of that later) and I suspect i am over doing it with those 3.

I’ll be creating a full case study next month when the competition is finished but to all intents and purposes I really don’t think that you need to be trying to get thousands of links to you sites. Stick to tools that work in a subtle way and rely on high quality content and you won’t go far wrong.

But don’t take my word for it… TEST TEST TEST.

There is a big difference between the way people go about their IM Businesses. At each end of the spectrum you have completely different styles, Some sit down and research a niche obsessively for weeks before they even attempt to build a site. Others will see a site on flippa or while doing a bit of browsing and immediately build a similar site.

In between those two are the majority of us. However we still differ widely in our approaches. some of us start by analyzing what we know about the niche we’ve chosen others will see a hot product and just dive in and create a site with very little if any research. If thats you then listen up… you are making a huge mistake.

When I first started with IM I didn’t have a clue what I was doing, I darted around niches like they were going out of fashion, one days i’d build a site on weight loss the next day it would be a site about acne, the next a site about hairless replacement. Why all those niches ?/ because they were “hot” everyone was doing them so they must be good..right?  Wrong!

Luckily I soon started to realize that I was making a big mistake by chasing the so called hot niches so I made a conscientious  decision to actually create sites about what i knew about and promote things that I needed and that i bought. Without knowing it I’d started to do market research.  Looking at my successful sites at the moment and almost every single one is a site about something myself and my wife know about or are passionate about and each one is one that we have done market research on.

Seven or eight months ago, I was out for a sunday afternoon beer with Andre Chaperon and his wife and they had some friends with them, Mark Acutt and his wife. You might not recognize Marks name immediately but he is the guy who knew nothing about IM that Andre coached In the Affiliate Bully product a few years back.  Myself and Mark A got to chatting and we had a lot of similar views about IM and IM products in particular..namely most of them sucked and did nothing to really help people master IM.

First choice you have to make is will you take the red Pill or the blue pill.

Take the red pill and you’ll find you have to work , you’ll need to put in the hours and the hard grind. You’ll need to learn all about the business of IM and then when you master it put in into action. You’ll have failures along the way but you’ll have build your IM business on a solid foundation.

On the other hand you can take the blue pill, take the blue pill and you can buy loads of tools that promise to make you money with one , two or 3 clicks. You are allowed to believe the hype and can liberate yourself from the daily grind of working at building an income by trying to buy your way to success. The blue pill will allow you to suspend reality and ignore that little bit of your brain that says .. This crap can’t work.

If you decided to take the blue pill goodbye, we’ll still be here when you come back poorer but wiser in a few months time.

Now that I am talking to you guys who had the sense to take the Red Pill it’s time to move onto another of those quotes I mentioned above.

I’m trying to free your mind, Neo. But I can only show you the door. You’re the one that has to walk through it.

I personally know some of the finest most ethical marketers you could ever hope to meet and when we talk to each other the topic often comes onto the subject of our customers. We all seem to have the same experiences and stories which revolve about people who buy our products with the best intentions , study them but them seem to have a mental block about putting them into action.  As Morpheus says .. we can only show you the door …. YOU are the one that has to walk through it.

Everyone of you who are reading this has the ability to make money online , if you are currently making money you have the ability to make more much more. You can do it on your terms and your way.

I know i’ve said this a lot of times recently but, don’t promise the world and then deliver a small island off the coast of greenland, promise that small island off greenland and deliver the world. It’s a far better way too market and to build a loyal core of clients.

Fear, doubt and disbelief are what is holding many of us back, even I suffer from them , and I am usually cocky and confident so I can appreciate what it must be like for someone who hasn’t had a lot of success at IM.

You can do it… Free Your Mind.   Start Now take a positive step towards one of your goals , then tomorrow take another one. You’ll be 2 steps closer to your goal.

Every so often there comes along a tool or plugin that is game changing. Today i am going to look at one such plugin.

When I first saw this plugin a few weeks back I thought “yep thats interesting” and then I forgot about it. Later I saw it in action and the lightbulb finally came on, not just any old lightbulb but huge Neon Vegas style lightbulbs.

More than any plugin i’ve seen in the past year this is the one that I wish I had thought of. It’s so simple but so effective.

So what Plugin is it? It’s called Blog Like Reveal and it hides content on your blog until someone clicks on the Facebook Like button, Then it reveals the content. Told you it was simple BUT It’s also pure genius.

The Facebook Like button is one of the most viral tools available today, If I click like then all my friends see what I liked and they’ll come along and hopefully have a look at what I find so interesting. So suddenly from having 10 or 20 people looking at your blog posts everyday you are getting hundreds.

Think what this can do to for your online business?

You create a blog post and in it you “Hide ” some content, a download link, a video or a discount code etc. The visitor clicks on like and then the content gets revealed to them….
