I am angry, really angry, you know that anger when you want to smash a cup off the wall or scream really loudly, that’s how angry I am and it’s been buIlding up for the past 12 hours. So hopefully this post will help me calm down.

I thought I’d seen it all in IM, unwritten products selling for $2000 then being rolled out over 10 weeks to give the outsourcers time to write it (happens more than you think!) Version 3 of a book selling for $197 when it’s the same as the original that sold for $37. As I said I thought I had seen it all but last night I saw a new low.

There was a product released last nIght that cost $2700 it was promoted by the usual suspects. Unfortunatly it was also promoted by people who should know better. One even had the cheek to point out all the considerable flaws and inaccuracies in the marketing and then still couldn’t resist adding a link to it.

So it seems the price of a marketers soul Is $1350 which Is probably less than a good escort for a night in San Diego, I know who I think has more class

So why have I got such a downer on this product, well it encompasses all that Is bad in IM. You see the product Is about creating software and it comes on the back of an Iphone app that was created by the marketer in question. it initially made him $2000 after his cousin sent details to his list (it’s a bIIIIIIggggg list), they also offered a bonus report about how they made the app to people who bought the product. it was 6 pages long (with lots of graphics!)

Of course they didn’t mention that in the $2000 they had to pay 30% (or 40%) to apple and the development costs were $1700

So we have an app that sold purely beacause it was promoted by a big marketer, that gave it momentum so it might have made more sales, Frankly I am not interested.

We have a 6 page report and we have 2 marketers .

No problem we’ll roll it out over 5 weeks that way we can get the money fIrst before we have to do any work

So what do you need to do to make software…

First rule is remember that you’ll need to support it…you will need a support desk

Find a good programmer who has experience.

Expect delays …programmers live it their own alternate reality

test, test test again, it needs to work on all sorts of different hardware configurations.

After that it’s just like releasing any products, you need JV partners and to build a buzz.

I am currently creating some software myself, it’s not an easy task despite outsourcing everything.

Finally everytime I write somethign like this I get comments along the lines of ” you are only jealous that you can’t sell products for so much” Part of that is probably right I’d love to be able to sell a product at $2000 or $3000 but i also like to be able to sleep at night and know i’ve given value in my products. So thanks very much but i’ll take a good nights sleep over a millionaire lifestyle any day.

However If you want to spend $2700 then i’ll happily fly to your home and sit beside you and walk you through the whole process…I might even buy you a beer… Now that that other product say that!

Ohh One other thing, it’s a 5 week course…the refund period is 30 days , they’ll save what they think is the best stuff until last.. Do The math!

Now having got that off my chest I actually feel less angry!

So as a warning I am going to brutally honest in this post and if you don’t want the truth or can’t handle the truth then please go and watch some funny clips on You Tube and continue dreaming about your bright future in Internet marketing, because that is what it will be a dream.

Truth #1

You can’t go straight from $0 to $10,000 a month.

Despite what many people will have you believe it’s just not going to happen. You can however go from $0 to $1 then $1 to $10 then $10 to $100 then $100 to …. etc

Truth #2

You have to learn the basics, actually not just learn them you need to master them. It doesn’t matter what you are doing to earn your money online there are a few skills you need to master

You need to be able to pick a good niche

You need to be able to get traffic

You need to be able to connect with people through your words or videos.

Or you need to be able to pay people who can do it for you.

Truth #3

You need to stop being big on thoughts and empty on deeds. In the words of Nike: Just Do IT. Put aside a certain amount of time a day and spend that time developing your business it doesn’t matter if you work full time you can still find time to work at IM. If you can’t then admit defeat and walk away IM is not for you. I’ve talked to several friends who make money full time doing internet marketing and it seems we all have one thing in common we don’t watch that much TV. Personally I watch less than 5 hours a week. Turn off your TV and Take action.

Truth #4

Internet Marketing is fun. It really is, learn it, master it and you’ll go to work with a smile on your face and look forward to what the day will bring. Internet Marketing is a new business with so many possibilities that if you are open to new opportunities you can generate income from out of no where at least thats what it seems to outsiders

Truth #5

This stuff is easy so long as you take action.

Take Action – Find a Niche
Take Action – Build a site
Take Action – Promote the site
Take Action – Pay the money you earned into your bank
Take Action – Rinse and Repeat

Internet marketing is a business if you want to make money online then you need to think like a businessman (or business woman!). Take responsibility for your actions, get a business plan together, play to your strengths and outsource your weaknesses. By doing this you will maximise your chances of succeeding. If you fail there is no one else to blame but yourself. However there is no reason why you should fail if you take a systematic approach to things and don’t expect to be buying that yacht in a few months time.

While you are doing this don’t lose site of the big picture… you’ve developed a very valuable talent. A talent that you can use to make money from areas you wouldn’t normally expect.

If you’ve been in internet marketing for more than a month you should know how to build a site that will sell. You also know how to promote it what it takes to get it to the top of the rankings. You now know more than 95% of the people you meet every day!. Use this to your advantage, I regularly get asked if i can help people with their websites, one thing that is abundantly clear is that these people know nothing and i mean absolutely zero about website promotion. If they do any promotion what so ever it’s throwing a few dollars a day at an Adwords campaign.

I’ve mention this before but one of the members of WordPress Goldmine has become very successful by applying what he has learned to the “Real World”, and has so much business he has to turn work down. Several other members have followed his advice and are also making money from this area.. I was talking to one today who is currently working on a deal that could bring in seriously big bucks.

Anyway I sort of went a bit off track there a bit but If you read his book I am sure you’ll thank me!! Right back to business….

Here are a few simple rules that will help you to become more successful this year…

1. Concentrate on what you do well.

We all have things we are good at and things we hate doing, I love keyword research and writing but hate the promotion side of things.. so i outsource my promotion for a few dollars and hour and concentrate on the bits I like.

If you are just starting out and you feel you can’t afford to hire outsourced staff, then why not do what you like doing, writing 2 articles will probably pay for 5 hours of outsourced backlink building.

2. The 80/20 Rule (Thanks Heather!)

You should spend 20% of your time researching and building your business and 80% promoting it. This is a bit of a pain if like me you hate promotion but it’s got to be done. This way you drastically increase your chances of success.

3. Spread the Load

Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. try to give yourself 3 or 4 streams of income then if one dies you have others that can be built up to fill in the gap. I would always recommend starting with AdSense as your first stream, it’s easy and you learn a hell of a lot that will be useful when you start to build up your other income streams.

Finally, 2 bits of information for you…

This has all been brought on by the February Step by Step I did in The WordPress goldmine Forum. Over 14 days I researched a niche and built a site and did some very simple promotion. I created the videos over 14 days but the actual time taken to research build and promote the site was under 3 hours.  Yes a whole 3 hours of my life.

I did nothing fancy just kept it simple. At the end of february In the last video I monetized the site. 1 month later the site has earned me over $200.  I’ll repeat that again $200 for a site that took me 3 hours.

I have several clickbank accounts which I  use to target different niches. At the beginning of March one account was averaging about $90 per week. During the month I wrote or oursourced about 20 articles which have been submitted. The result is that account has earned almost $700 this week and $600 last week.

Once again there was nothing fancy involved just keeping to the basics and keeping it simple.

No one is ever going to write an ebook that contains the secret to internet marketing as it wouldn’t even fill up one line of an ebook….  Traffic + Monetization = Income.   (That noise is the sound of me shooting myself in the Foot)

So come on try something simple, you’ll save time, make money and prove to yourself that internet marketing really does work.

If you wanted to you could even set them up a personal webpage that will redirect on to your salespage. To take it one step further and once they make 10 sales or more teach them a bit more about affilaite marketing. It’s a win win system for everyone involved.
